There’s a new console generation upon us and demand for the Xbox Series X is massively outstripping supply. If you’ve been lucky enough to get your hands on a brand new Series X, then why not make some money back? It’s easy to sell Xbox consoles on the used market, and the Xbox One can still fetch a good price.
Yet if you want to go down this route and make some money off your old hardware, there are a few steps that you need to take to prepare your console for sale.
Are you ready to learn more and make some cash? Then read on!
1. Backup Anything You Need
Before you sell your console, you should consider backing up games and other data so that you don’t need to redownload them on your new system. Thanks to the great backwards compatibility of the Series X, backing up downloaded Xbox One games is a fantastic way to save time the next time you want to play.
To backup your games and other data, you’ll need to have an external hard drive or other external storage. It should have at least 256 GB of storage and should be empty: any other data you have on the disk will be wiped.
To backup your games and apps, follow these steps:
- Go to settings
- Go to system
- Scroll to storage and select it
- Select the console’s hard drive under “manage storage.”
- Choose what you’d like to backup and start the process
2. Reset to Factory Settings
The last thing that you want to do, when selling used consoles, is to leave your credit card information or other personal information on the console’s disk. The best way to avoid this is by resetting the console to factory settings. This also makes it less of a hassle for its next owner.
On Xbox One, this is a very easy process. Do be warned that this will erase everything on the system. When you’re ready to get started, follow these steps:
- Go to settings
- Go to system
- Select “console info”
- Go to “reset console”
- Reset and clear your console
3. Check Your Disk Drive
While more and more of us are switching to digital downloads rather than disks, buying hard copies of games still makes a lot of sense for those who like to build a physical collection, have slow internet, or who want to sell them after they’ve played them.
If your physical games collection is your pride and joy, you should eject your Xbox One’s disk drive and make sure that there isn’t still a game inside. Why give something away for free that you could sell and make more money?
4. Disconnect All Peripherals and Cords
Now that you’ve reset your Xbox, backed up your games, and checked the disk drive, you need to disconnect all your peripherals and your TV. Unplug every cord carefully and take care to avoid any damage.
Now that you’ve disconnected all your cords, you should bundle them all up so that you can sell them with the Xbox. Without these components, your Xbox won’t be “complete” and you’ll have a harder time getting a good price.
5. Clean Your Xbox
Over the course of its life, the Xbox’s fans will have done a lot of work cooling off your console. Unfortunately, these fans are also a magnet for dust, which means that your console’s vents are likely clogged with the stuff.
Thankfully, it’s pretty easy to clean the vents. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe the area of the vents and then, where the dust is thickly clogged, use a can of compressed air and spray it loose.
You should also clean the USB ports on your console with a cotton swab, as dust and dirt also often make a home here. After you’ve removed all of the dust from the console’s ports and vents, you should wipe its surface with a microfiber cloth to remove any fingerprints and other smears that are on its case.
Finally, you should also clean off your controller and remove any dust from the console’s cords. Controllers often get especially mucky due to the oils in our skin, so give it a wipe with your cloth until it looks as good as new.
